Outi MERISALO (Jyväskylä) Poggio Bracciolini (1380-1459) left ample evidence for his scribal work. The tortuous textual history of his De varietate fortunae, most probably put into circulation in 1448, offers interesting material on what would be acceptable variation for an author and what would not. The two most interesting mss. of De varietate fortunae are Ricc. 871 and Ny Kgl. Saml. 234. In these mss., the main body of text is in the same hand, elegant italics. Poggio's interventions range from corrections of spelling to large textual modifications. The different layers of text present a huge part of the variants registered elsewhere in the tradition. This paper will examine Poggio's handwork in these two manuscripts and place the information in the context of the manuscript tradition of De varietate fortunae.
