APICES est ouvert à toute personne qui s'intéresse à l'étude scientifique :

  • de l'histoire des écritures ;
  • des livres et documents écrits, dans leur forme matérielle et leur contenu ;
  • des personnes et des institutions qui les ont produits, utilisés ou conservés.

Whom is APICES meant for?

APICES is open to everyone who is interested in the scholarly study of:

  • the history of writing (ancient and medieval scripts)
  • books and documents, both in their physical aspects and in their contents
  • the persons and institutions connected with making, using and keeping them.
L'alphabet latin et les écritures manuscrites du Moyen Age sont son domaine principal. Mais les spécialistes d'autres époques et d'autres aires culturelles (en premier lieu méditerranéennes) sont aussi bienvenus. La civilisation du manuscrit ne saurait non plus être dissociée des champs d'étude voisins : tout particulièrement celui des débuts de l'imprimerie, dans la mesure où l'incunable s'efforce de mécaniser le travail des scribes ; mais aussi celui des inscriptions sur divers supports, qui fournissent un témoignage capital sur le rôle joué par l'écriture dans les civilisations anciennes et médiévales.
Although the domain concerned with Latin script is the predominant one, scholars working in other periods and cultural areas (especially the Mediterranean) are also welcome. The study of manuscripts will not be dissociated from other close areas of interest: in particular the beginning of the printing press, where the incunable tries to mechanise the work of the scribes; but also inscriptions on various supports, which constitute important evidence to the role played by writing among the Ancient and Medieval civilisations.
APICES accueille donc non seulement les spécialistes de profession (chercheurs, enseignants, conservateurs, restaurateurs, etc.) mais aussi bien les collectionneurs, libraires, calligraphes ou amateurs qui souhaitent s'associer au progrès des disciplines ainsi réunies. APICES thus welcomes not only professionals (researchers, teachers, curators, restorers, etc.), but also collectors, booksellers, calligraphers, or amateurs who wish to contribute to the advancement of these disciplines.

Buts

L'association vise à développer, parmi ceux dont les intérêts se rencontrent dans le domaine ainsi défini, le sentiment de former une communauté.

Objectives

The association aims to develop a sense of community among those whose common interests have been defined above.

Elle contribue à rassembler et diffuser des informations utiles à ses membres : la communication électronique, par la liste de diffusion APILIST, est le moyen courant de cette activité ; les liens établis avec la Gazette du livre médiéval en sont le prolongement, qui permet aux membres de disposer d'une source d'information riche et régulière. It contributes towards the gathering and circulation of information useful to its members: electronic mail, via APILIST, is the current means adopted for such activity. The members may make use of a rich and reliable source of information through the ties established with the Gazette du livre médiéval.

Elle soutient l'activité scientifique de ses membres en concourant au financement des manifestations dans lesquelles ils s'investissent. Elle peut aussi accorder un parrainage gratuit à des opérations scientifiques ou pédagogiques afin d'en garantir la qualité, d'en assurer la publicité et de faciliter l'obtention de financements extérieurs.

 The association supports the activities of its members by contributing to the funding of scientific events in which they are involved. It may also graciously grant sponsorship to scientific or educational projects so as to guarantee their quality, to provide publicity and to help gaining external funding.

Réalisations

Sans autres ressources que les cotisations de ses membres, APICES a mené à bien plusieurs opérations répondant à ses objectifs.

Achievements

With resources only provided by the subscriptions of its members, APICES has already met quite a number of its goals.

• Liste de diffusion "APILIST".
Une liste de diffusion électronique a été créée à l'usage exclusif des membres d'APICES et du CIPL. Ce service permet de diffuser instantanément des informations à tous les membres de la liste en utilisant les ressources de la messagerie électronique. APILIST diffuse notamment :
  • des informations bibliographiques (parution d'ouvrages ou d'articles) ;
  • l'annonce ou le programme d'une manifestation scientifique (congrès, colloque, exposition...) ;
  • des nouvelles relatives au lancement ou au développement d'un programme de recherche ;
  • des informations relatives a l'accessibilité des fonds de manuscrits ou d'archives (fermetures de bibliothèques, microfilms disponibles, bases de données consultables...) ;
  • des demandes de renseignements concernant un problème quelconque dans le domaine de la paléographie, de la codicologie, des premiers imprimes, et d'autres sujets apparentés : (enluminure, reliure, histoire des collections...) ;
  • une opinion sur un sujet scientifique quelconque, en vue de susciter une discussion générale.
• The mailing-list ("APILIST").
An electronic network has been created for the exclusive use of APICES-members and of the CIPL. This is a service allowing the user to send information instantly to all members of the list, using ordinary e-mail software. In particular, they may thus:
  • distribute bibliographical updates (notice of publication of books or articles);
  • announce a learned gathering or other event (conventions, conferences, exhibits, etc.), or to post its program;
  • release news about new research projects or developments within existing projects;
  • inform others of the accessibility of manuscript collections or archives (library closures, availability of microfilms, data-bases open for consultation, etc.);
  • query others about a problem of whatever sort concerning palaeography, codicology, incunables and related topics (illumination, binding, history of collections, etc.);
  • venture an opinion on any scientific subject, in the hope of generating a discussion.
• Bibliographie des membres.
Les membres d'APICES sont invités à signaler régulièrement leurs publications au Secrétariat. A partir de ces informations, une Bibliographie est établie et affichée dans les pages Internet de l'Association.. 		• Members' bibliography.
The members of APICES are invited to notify the secretary regularly of their publications. On the basis of this information, a bibliography is drawn up and displayed in the Associations' web-site.
• Liste de manuscrits récemment acquis
L'assemblée générale d'APICES tenue en 2000 a décidé d'établir un Index international des manuscrits médiévaux et incunables récemment acquis par les bibliothèques publiques. Cette liste est en ligne sur notre site. Elle est alimentée par les informations fournies par les utilisateurs.		 • List of recently acquired manuscripts.
The General Meeting of APICES held in 2000 decided to set up an International Index of medieval manuscripts and incunabula recently acquired by public Libraries. This list is vailable on our website. It is fed with information provided the users.
• Parrainage d'activités scientifiques
En raison de la dispersion des membres, APICES n'a pas la possibilité d'organiser des manifestations scientifique en son nom propre.
Pour remédier à cette situation ont été fondées les dotations J. M. M. Hermans, attribuées chaque semestre pour contribuer au financement de manifestations scientifiques organisées par les membres.

• Patronage of scientific events
Due to the dispersion of the Members, it is hardly possible for APICES to organise scientific events of its own.

This has been remedied by founding the J. M. M. Hermans Grants, which are awarded every six months to contribute to the funding of events organised by the Members.
En outre, APICES patronne occasionnellement des sessions consacrées aux manuscrits, dans le cadre des congrès internationaux d'études médiévales qui se tiennent chaque année (notamment à Kalamazoo et à Leeds).

In addition, APICES occasionnally sponsors sessions devoted to manuscript studies within the international congresses of medieval studies which are held every year (at Kalamazoo and Leeds in particular).

Structure

Fondée en 1995 à l'initiative du Comité international de paléographie latine (CIPL), APICES a été dotée d'une structure visant à assurer une coopération étroite entre les deux organismes.

Le souci d'améliorer cette coopération a récemment amené à réformer les statuts originels. En vertu des nouveaux statuts :

• l'Association est administrée par un "Modéramen" de sept personne, comprenant :
– cinq membres élus par les membres de l'Association, parmi lesquels sont dédignés un Président, un Secrétaire et un Trésorier;
– deux membres du CIPL: son Président, et un autre membre désigné pour cette fonction.

• les membres du CIPL sont de plein droit membres associés de l'Association.

Organisation

APICES was founded in 1995 by the Comité international de paléographie latine (CIPL) with a structure aiming at a close co-operation between the two bodies.

In order to improve this co-operation, the original Statute recently had to be revised. According to this reform :

• the Association is governed by a "Moderamen" of seven persons, consisting of :
– five Members elected by the Members of the Association, among whom a President, a Secretary and a Treasurer are appointed;
– two Members of the CIPL, viz. its President and another Member specially appointed for this purpose.

• Members of the CIPL are by right associate Members of the Association.
